The
International Speech Contest is the flagship competition of Toastmasters
International, culminating annually in the World Championship of Public
Speaking®.
For
the 2025–2026 contest cycle, the competition follows a rigorous hierarchy
starting at the club level and progressing through Area, Division, District,
region quarterfinals, and semifinals, before reaching the world stage.
To
be eligible for the 2026 International Speech Contest, members must be in good
standing of a club in good standing and must have completed Levels 1 and 2 of
any paths in the Toastmasters Pathways learning experience or have earned a
Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) award.
Contest
Structure and Modality for 2026
The
2025–2026 season introduces specific rules regarding how contests are
conducted. While clubs have the flexibility to hold contests in person, online,
or in a hybrid format, all International Speech Contests from the Area
level through the district level must be conducted in person.
A
notable exception for this cycle is the "Online Speech Contest,"
which is now treated as a separate modality rather than just a format; this
specific contest is conducted entirely online for members who primarily
participate in virtual environments.
Speech
Requirements and Timing
The
International Speech Contest requires a five- to seven-minute original speech
on any subject the contestant chooses. The speech must be thematic in
nature, possessing a clear opening, body, and conclusion, and cannot be a mere
monologue or act.
Timing
is strictly enforced:
- Green Light: 5 minutes
- Yellow Light: 6 minutes
- Red Light: 7 minutes Speeches less than 4 minutes and
30 seconds or longer than 7 minutes and 30 seconds result in
disqualification.
Judging
Criteria and Scoring
Judges
evaluate contestants based on a standardized ballot where 50% of the score is
derived from Content, 30% from Delivery, and 20% from Language.
- Content (50%): This includes speech development
(structure, support material, and smoothness), effectiveness (audience
reception and achievement of purpose), and speech value (the
meaningfulness and originality of the message).
- Delivery (30%): Judges look for physical presentation (body
language and appearance), voice (flexibility, volume, and rate), and
manner (confidence and enthusiasm).
- Language (20%): This focuses on the appropriateness of word
choice for the audience and the correctness of grammar and pronunciation.
Preparation
and Success Strategies
Successful
contestants often undergo hundreds of rehearsals and multiple revisions. For
example, past finalists have reported performing up to 360 rehearsals and 18
revisions to perfect a single contest speech.
Key
strategies for winning include studying previous World Champions, choosing a
topic that balances personal passion with audience value, and utilizing
rhetorical tools such as triads, metaphors, and storytelling to anchor the
message.
Beyond the trophy, the contest is designed to "fast-forward" a member's communication skills by forcing them to refine a single message to its highest possible quality through repetitive feedback and performance.
