What is Mentor Together or Mentor to Go website platform in India?

Mentor Together is a premier Indian non-profit organization and digital platform designed to provide life-changing career mentorship to young people from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. By utilizing mobile technology and a structured pedagogical approach, the platform bridges the gap between formal education and the practical requirements of the modern workforce.

Foundation of Mentorship

To understand the "Mentor Together" model, one must first look at the academic and literary foundations of mentorship. In the seminal work The Elements of Mentoring, authors W. Brad Johnson and Charles R. Ridley define mentorship as a "dynamic, reciprocal, and personal relationship" where a more experienced person (the mentor) guides the development of a less experienced person (the mentee).

Mentor Together operationalizes this by focusing on "Psychosocial Support" and "Career Guidance," two pillars identified in Kathy Kram’s foundational research on mentoring functions.

The platform addresses a specific sociological challenge: the lack of "Social Capital." As Robert Putnam explores in Bowling Alone, individuals from marginalized backgrounds often lack the "bridging social capital" (connections outside their immediate social circle) necessary for upward mobility.

Mentor Together acts as a digital bridge, connecting students from low-income families with professionals from top-tier corporations like LinkedIn, Amazon, and Cisco in India.

The Digital Ecosystem: Mentor To Go

The core of the Mentor Together platform is its technology-enabled product, Mentor To Go. This is an Android and web-based application designed to facilitate remote mentoring relationships across India.

Accessibility and Scale: The platform targets the 18–22 age group, specifically undergraduate students in their second or third year of study. By moving mentorship to a mobile app, the organization overcomes geographical barriers, allowing a student in a rural village to receive guidance from a professional in a metropolitan hub.

The Matching Algorithm: Unlike manual spreadsheet-based matching, the platform uses an algorithm to pair mentors and mentees based on interests, skills, and values. This mirrors the "Smart Match" technology found in enterprise-level platforms like Together or Ten Thousand Coffees, ensuring high compatibility and satisfaction.

Structured Curriculum: The platform does not leave the relationship to chance. It hosts a "Work Readiness" curriculum. This structured approach is supported by research in The Handbook of Youth Mentoring, which suggests that formal, goal-oriented mentoring programs are often more effective for youth development than unstructured ones.

Addressing the Skills and Gender Gap

A primary driver for the Mentor Together platform is the "employability gap" in India. Statistics indicate that while higher education enrollment is rising, only about 46% of graduates are considered employable. This is often due to a lack of "soft skills" or "21st-century skills"—competencies such as communication, critical thinking, and professional etiquette.

Furthermore, the platform places a heavy emphasis on closing the gender gap. In India, the labor force participation rate for educated women is significantly lower (approx. 30%) compared to men (approx. 80%). Mentor Together provides young women with female role models and professional networks to help them navigate restrictive social norms and transition into the workforce.

The Mentor Journey and Training

The platform ensures quality through a rigorous selection and training process for mentors:

Learning Hub: Prospective mentors must complete training modules on the platform to build the skills necessary for effective guidance.

Screening: Following training, a 30-minute interview is conducted by the Mentor Together team to ensure the mentor's alignment with the program's values.

Support System: Each pair is assigned a "Pair Manager" who monitors progress and troubleshoots issues, ensuring the relationship remains productive.

Impact and Corporate Integration

The efficacy of the Mentor Together platform is evidenced by its outcomes. Reports indicate that 77% of mentees improve their career decision-making, and 71% show increased self-efficacy. The organization is funded primarily through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, partnering with global firms to provide their employees with volunteering opportunities as mentors.

In summary, Mentor Together is not merely a website but a comprehensive digital intervention. It utilizes the principles of developmental psychology and social capital theory to provide a scalable solution to India’s youth unemployment and inequality challenges.
